Ecommerce Return Rate Planning Guide
Return rate is often ignored in early product calculations, but it can decide whether a product is scalable. Refunds reduce revenue, add support cost and can create restocking or disposal losses.
How to model returns
Use a conservative expected return rate in every profit calculator. For example, a 5% return allowance on a $50 order is a $2.50 expected revenue loss before considering support time or reverse logistics.
Signals of high return risk
Products with sizing issues, fragile packaging, unclear product photos or exaggerated claims often have higher return rates. Improve listing clarity before increasing paid traffic.
Operational fixes
Add accurate dimensions, clear use cases, comparison photos and expectation-setting copy. For marketplace sellers, monitor return reasons and update content quickly.
